Traffic Ticket Lawyer in Amarillo
Plain-Language Guidance for Amarillo Traffic Citations
A traffic citation can affect more than the amount printed on the ticket. Quackenbush Law Firm represents Amarillo drivers facing allegations such as speeding, driving without insurance, school-zone or construction-zone violations, reckless driving, and commercial-driver violations.
We have defended thousands of Texans during more than 30 years of criminal-defense work. Attorney Quackenbush has worked with county and state prosecutors, and we provide services in English and Spanish. We explain the charge, the court handling it, and possible consequences, including a reported conviction, insurance effects, or driver’s license action.

How We Review & Defend Traffic Citations
We begin by hearing what happened, examining the available paperwork, and discussing possible next steps. The citation and related documents generally identify the alleged offense, assigned court, and deadline. Because the named court controls the process, drivers should preserve the ticket and all documents connected to the stop.
Our review can extend beyond the citation. We gather available records and reports, speak with witnesses, and examine photographs or video when they exist. We also look for errors, gaps, or missing information in the police work that may affect the defense.
Our work may include:
- Reviewing the charge, court information, and response deadline
- Examining reports, witness accounts, photographs, and video
- Communicating through the appropriate court process
- Explaining hearings, negotiations, plea offers, and trial options
As the case develops, we explain upcoming dates and decisions in plain language. We don’t promise that a ticket can be dismissed, reduced, or kept off a driving record. We assess the facts and available procedures so the driver can make an informed decision.
Where Amarillo Traffic Tickets Are Handled
Amarillo spans Potter County and Randall County. Depending on where the alleged offense occurred and which agency issued the citation, the case may go to Amarillo Municipal Court, a Potter County Justice of the Peace court, or a Randall County Justice of the Peace court. Procedures and eligibility requirements can differ, so the court listed on the citation matters.
Amarillo Municipal Court classifies traffic tickets as Class C misdemeanors, which usually carry a fine rather than jail time. Paying a City of Amarillo citation through its online service constitutes a guilty plea and waives the right to a jury trial. The payment may also produce a conviction reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Contesting a citation means responding through the court rather than resolving it through payment. A driver may also want to evaluate whether a court-authorized option is available. We can review the specific citation before the driver chooses a response.

Deferred Disposition & Defensive Driving Options
Eligibility depends on the citation, the driver’s record, and the court’s requirements. Deferred disposition allows a driver to plead guilty or no contest while the judge postpones a finding of guilt during a period of up to 180 days. If the driver completes every condition, the case is dismissed without a final conviction.
At Amarillo Municipal Court, the deferral period may run from 30 to 180 days. Conditions can include avoiding new citations, performing community service, completing an educational class, or taking a driver safety course. Drivers younger than 25 who receive this option for a moving violation must complete an approved driving safety course under Texas law.
Some eligible drivers may request dismissal by completing a six-hour defensive driving course approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The request must be made on or before the answer date shown on the citation. Eligibility depends on the charge, driving history, license status, and court requirements.
The court excludes certain allegations from deferred disposition, including driving 25 mph or more above the speed limit, passing a school bus while it’s loading or unloading, and committing a construction-zone offense while workers are present. A request isn’t approval, so drivers should confirm their options before relying on this procedure.
Traffic Violations for Commercial Driver’s License Holders
Commercial driver’s license holders face distinct restrictions. Texas doesn’t allow deferred disposition for a moving violation when the person held this type of license at the time of the offense. The standard driving safety course dismissal provision is also unavailable, even if the driver was operating a personal vehicle.
Amarillo Municipal Court lists moving violations by commercial license holders and serious commercial-motor-vehicle traffic violations among its deferral exclusions. For commercial licensing purposes, Texas identifies speeding 15 mph or more above the limit, reckless driving, improper lane changes, and following too closely as examples of serious traffic violations.
Two serious traffic violations within three years can lead to a 60-day commercial driving disqualification. Three within three years can lead to a 120-day disqualification. Whether those consequences apply depends on the current allegation and the driver’s record, so an individual review is important before entering a plea or paying the citation.
